Our History of The Getaway Restaurant: A Culinary Experience Born from Lake Como’s Past

The Getaway Restaurant is located at a historical landmark, The French Country Inn, originally known as the The Lake Como Hotel. We are nestled in the west end of Lake Como, in Lake Geneva WI, right on the lake.

The Lake Como hotel has a very interesting history. The main house which is made from solid oak was hand-carved with inter laid wooden floors and staircase; it was built in Denmark in the 1880’s and then transported by boat in 1883 for the Chicago World’s Fair. After the fair, the building was purchased and transported by railroad to the shores of Lake Como.

Although it has always remained a family-friendly resort, it was also a favorite getaway for well-known gangsters such as George “Bugs” Moran, Baby Face Nelson, as well as John Dillinger. The inn’s secluded location and owner’s discreet hospitality made it a perfect place to escape their reality, which included government agents.
